Recommended Stay

On the first and third Sunday of each month, the Recinto Ferial La Paloma in Benalmádena Costa hosts an organic market. It's a small gathering of farmers and artisan producers selling certified organic food direct to consumers.
The market is part of the Guadalhorce Ecológico cooperative, a non-profit network of farmers from the Guadalhorce Valley inland from Málaga. The same cooperative runs organic markets in Marbella, Málaga, Mijas, and La Cala de Mijas on different days.
In Benalmádena, it occupies the same Recinto Ferial site used by the Wednesday flea market, though the two events are completely different in character.
What's Sold
All produce at this market carries organic certification. Stock follows the season rather than a fixed list.
- Fruit and vegetables: Seasonal crops from Guadalhorce Valley farms, often including heritage varieties rarely found in supermarkets.
- Citrus fruits: Oranges, lemons, grapefruits. The valley is well known for them.
- Eggs: Free-range eggs from local farms.
- Honey: Monofloral and polyfloral varieties; flavours shift with the season's flowers.
- Olive oil: Cold-pressed extra virgin from local producers.
- Artisan bread: Slow-fermented sourdough and traditional breads.
- Wine: Organic Andalusian wines.
- Natural cured meats: Ibérico pork products from free-range farms.
The Guadalhorce Ecológico Network
The Guadalhorce Valley, running inland from Málaga towards Ardales and Alora, is one of Andalusia's most fertile agricultural zones. The cooperative was formed to let small organic farmers sell directly to consumers without going through wholesale intermediaries.
By selling direct, farmers get a fairer price and shoppers get fresher food. Most producers are present at the market themselves, which means you can ask about their methods, the season, and how to use unfamiliar varieties.
Atmosphere
This is a quiet, purposeful market. It draws organic food shoppers rather than casual browsers. There's no haggling. Prices reflect the cost of certified organic farming. Bring a bag and small change, though most stalls take cards.
The location next to Paloma Park means you can walk straight in after the market to see the free-roaming peacocks, ducks, and rabbits.
Do's
- Confirm it is a 1st or 3rd Sunday before going
- Bring a cool bag for produce
- Ask farmers about seasonal varieties
- Visit Paloma Park next door afterwards
Don'ts
- Expect this every Sunday - it is biweekly
- Haggle - prices are set by certified organic producers
- Arrive late - small market, popular stalls sell out
- Miss the honey stalls
